LEATHER SHOES

Spring Summer 2019

Exclusive collection of 4 pairs of shoes designed by Carlota Barrera in collaboration with Steve Mono for her first Spring Summer 2019 collection The Matador and The Fisherman presented at Madrid Fashion Week and after which she won the Vogue Fashion Fund Award.

Based on the basic construction of the farmer’s sandal, the shoes showcase a reinterpretation of Carlota Barrera’s signature cut outs. Designed in London and entirely handmade in Spain, the shoes are made in a traditional workshop run by the same family for three generations, relying on the same machines and techniques that have been used for over 60 years. They are made of leather with rubber soles made from tyre factory waste, featuring small pin marks on the inner insole characteristic of traditional craftsmanship.

The creation of a true handmade shoe involves some 40-50 steps, making large-scale production impossible without resorting to complex industrial mechanisms.

THE MATADOR JACKET

Spring Summer 2019

Handbraided jacket in pleita with silk lining

Handmade jacket designed by Carlota Barrera for her first Spring Summer 2019 collection The Matador and The Fisherman, presented at the Madrid Fashion Week and after which she obtained the Vogue Fashion Fund Award.

Is it possible to separate the beauty and complexity of the bullfighting costume from the brutality of the show and the bullfighting trophies? Through this question, the piece seeks to recontextualise the traditional bullfighter’s jacket.

The jacket is braided by the artisan Javier S. Medina, whose work is purely self-taught, using a pleita braiding technique, weaving bundles of esparto grass into elaborate braids. Each thread is meticulously stitched to ensure the correct structure and shape of the pattern. Contrasting with the rawness of the outer materials, the inside of the jacket is lined with a 100% silk lining, hand- stitched due to the rigidity of the piece.

Challenging the aesthetics of luxury, this piece shows the immense value in the craftsmanship behind the construction and manipulation of materials, whether luxurious or, as in this case, humble.

BOLSOS

Spring Summer 2020

Collection of unique pieces composed of 3 hand-braided bags designed by Carlota Barrera in collaboration with Aldanondoyfdez as part of the Spring Summer 2020 Treacle collection.

The collection, inspired by the 70’s, highlights the remarkable difference of the decade in a hermetic and conservative Spain in contrast to a sexual and musical revolution across the borders. The traditional Spain of the gingham tablecloth, crochet and wicker chairs converses with transgressive figures such as David Bowie and Mick Jagger, drawing a parallel world of shared influences. How do Mick Jagger and the everyday objects of traditional Spain converge? Through psychedelics, gingham tablecloths are transformed into tricolour prints, and chairs and plaited baskets are distorted, forming optical effects of flat volumes.

The bags, made from discarded leather, were hand- braided by Catuxa and assembled by her and Ignacio in their workshop in Barcelona.
