UPHEAVAL
Fall Winter 2023 "Upheaval" is a collection born by the sea. It represents the nostalgic reminiscence of the brand's roots in the Spanish coast and man's relationship with nature. Carlota Barrera draws from previous stages and focuses on the brand’s evolution after several seasons and stimuli from two very different countries, to reach its current maturity.
Celebrating a sense of community and environmental awareness, the collection explores the techniques of artisanal coastal fishing and the art of net making, driving the brand's dialogue on gender and the replacement of rigid masculine codes whilst revaluing Spanish craftsmanship.
Carlota Barrera FW23 collection is a tribute to the fishermen who spend nights at sea, working long hours outdoors, exposed to the harsh environment and battling the waves and the cold.
The main pieces in the collection pay homage to "redeira" women who build the fishing nets on the Spanish coasts, carrying out a fundamental task in the fishing industry despite often facing a lack of recognition.
Pieces from the collection are based on the film "The Earth Trembles" by Luchino Visconti and its portrayal of the life of Sicilian fishermen, depicting the loneliness and harshness of the night at sea where only the sound of the water, the wind and the rustling of nets can be heard. The film created for the collection’s launch is inspired by the quote "The sea is bitter" from Visconti’s work, alluding to the bitterness of the night. In this struggle for survival, feelings of delirium, ecstasy and even the loss of the notion of time and space emerge, represented by different intensities of techno music.
