TO THE CORE
Something central to Carlota Barrera is a study of gender identities, wanting to start a dialogue about rigid gender codes being replaced by more fluid identities. Barrera’s queer female gaze allows her to see femininity with a unique closeness and masculinity with a unique artistic neutrality – the emotions, the forms, the behaviours, socially what it means to identify as female or male.
”As a queer woman, I built the brand to present a modern vision of core garments through a very personal female gaze, inspired by Spanish heritage, queer history and evolving gender identities.”
Tailoring features heavily, each piece reimagined and subverted from a classic silhouette to create fluid, contemporary designs. Experimenting with what’s covered and what we choose to uncover becomes a core code to the brand, celebrating the detail of the pieces and the confidence of the wearer. The rigour of tailoring is applied for comfort and practicality – knowing the rules means they can be broken confidently.
Carlota Barrera’s view of luxury is one that centres on quality, comfort, and timeless elegance – the core collection is the best encapsulation of these values, and the foundation of the brand’s sustainable approach. It is quintessential thoughtful design that transcends seasons and puts the wearer first.
At a time when we are all being asked to consider what is really essential, this perspective feels more relevant than ever.
